NELFUND Application Guide 2026

Documents, portal steps, and rejection reasons. Here is how to apply for the NELFUND student loan, what to prepare, and what to do when verification goes wrong.

Last updated: 15 October 2026

The Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) provides interest-free student loans to eligible Nigerian students to help with the cost of higher education. If you are a student of an eligible public tertiary institution, you can apply through the official NELFUND Student Loan Portal, subject to the required verification.

This guide covers who can apply, what you need, how to apply, common rejection or verification problems, and how to check whether your school has uploaded your records.

Who Qualifies for NELFUND?

NELFUND's student loan scheme is available to eligible Nigerian students in public tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Before applying, make sure:

  • You are a Nigerian citizen.
  • You are enrolled in an eligible public tertiary institution.
  • Your student information can be verified.
  • Your NIN can be successfully verified.
  • Your JAMB and educational information are available for verification where required.
  • Your institution has provided the necessary student records to NELFUND.

Having the required information does not automatically guarantee approval. NELFUND still needs to verify your identity, student status and other information provided in your application.

Documents You Need

Before starting your application, have these details available:

  • NIN for identity verification.
  • JAMB details for student-status verification.
  • Admission or student information, including your institution and programme.
  • Matriculation number, where applicable.
  • Active email address for your NELFUND account.
  • Phone number linked to your personal information.
  • Bank account details, particularly if you are applying for an upkeep loan.
  • Relevant supporting documents, if requested during the application.

Make sure your details are consistent across your NIN, JAMB, school records and NELFUND application. Small differences in names or other information can create verification problems.

How to Apply Step by Step

  1. Visit the official NELFUND portal. Start your application through the official NELFUND Student Loan Portal at loan.nelfund.gov.ng. Avoid unofficial websites or third-party links that ask for your login details.
  2. Confirm your Nigerian citizenship. During registration, you will be asked to confirm whether you are a Nigerian citizen. Select the appropriate option and continue.
  3. Verify your educational information. Enter the educational information requested by the portal. Use the same information contained in your official school and JAMB records.
  4. Verify your student status. NELFUND uses JAMB information as part of its student-status verification process. Ensure that the details you provide are accurate.
  5. Verify your NIN. Enter your NIN when requested and complete the verification process. If the verification fails, check that the number and your personal information are correct.
  6. Create your account. Provide an active email address and create your NELFUND account. Make sure you can access the email because it will be associated with your application.
  7. Select "Request for Student Loan". After logging in, select the option to request a student loan and follow the instructions displayed on your dashboard.
  8. Complete your application. Provide the requested academic, personal and banking information. If you are applying for an upkeep loan, ensure that your bank details are accurate.
  9. Review and submit. Check every section before submitting. Pay particular attention to your name, institution, programme, matriculation details and bank information.

Once submitted, NELFUND will review and verify the information before approval and disbursement.

Common NELFUND Rejection Reasons

1. Your school has not uploaded your records

Your application depends partly on information supplied by your institution. If your school has not uploaded your record, uploaded incomplete information, or has not updated your student status, your application may remain pending or encounter verification problems.

If this happens, contact your school's appropriate office, such as the student affairs, ICT, bursary or NELFUND desk, and ask them to confirm your records.

2. Your information does not match

Your application information needs to match the records used for verification. Common examples include:

  • Different names across records.
  • Incorrect date of birth.
  • Wrong JAMB information.
  • Incorrect matriculation number.
  • Wrong institution or programme.
  • Incorrect NIN details.

Review your information carefully before submitting your application.

3. Incomplete or incorrect application

Missing information or incorrect details can also cause problems during verification. Do not rush through the application. If you discover an error, check whether the portal allows you to correct it before submitting.

How to Check If Your School Has Uploaded Your Records

You can start by logging into your NELFUND account and checking your dashboard and institution information. If your institution or student information is missing or incorrect:

  1. Check your NELFUND dashboard.
  2. Confirm that your institution is displayed correctly.
  3. Compare the information with your school's records.
  4. Contact your institution's relevant office if something is missing.
  5. Ask them to confirm whether your student record has been uploaded or updated.
  6. Check your NELFUND account again after the institution makes the necessary update.

If the problem is caused by your school's records, repeatedly submitting another application may not solve it. The underlying institutional record needs to be corrected first.
