OOU JUPEB vs Pre-Degree

Both are one-year OOU CCED programmes, but they lead to very different places. Here is how to choose the one that fits your results.

Last updated: 15 October 2026

If you missed your course cut-off or want a stronger route into university, OOU's Centre for Continuing Education (CCED) runs two popular one-year options: the Pre-Degree programme and JUPEB. Both last one session, but they enter you at different levels through different JAMB routes, so the right choice depends on your O'Level and UTME situation.

The Short Answer

  • Pre-Degree prepares you for 100 Level and still requires JAMB UTME. Choose it if your O'Level needs improvement or you were close to the UTME cut-off.
  • JUPEB leads to 200 Level via JAMB Direct Entry and needs no UTME. Choose it if you already have strong O'Level credits and want to skip a year.

What Pre-Degree Gives You

Pre-Degree is a one-year foundation that covers the UTME subjects for your intended course plus Use of English, with continuous assessment and a final qualifying exam. On completion you become eligible to apply for first-degree admission, but you still write JAMB UTME and meet the cut-off. It does not guarantee a place. For the full process, see the OOU Pre-Degree Admission Guide.

What JUPEB Gives You

JUPEB is a national Advanced Level programme. You take three A'Level subjects relevant to your course, sit the JUPEB final exam (graded A to F), and need a minimum of five points across the three subjects for Direct Entry. It needs no UTME, and the results are recognized by Nigerian universities for 200 Level entry. Note that some courses, such as Medicine, Law and Nursing, may not accept JUPEB, so check the JAMB brochure for your course.

How to Choose

  1. Start with your O'Level: five credits including English and Mathematics, at one or two sittings.
  2. If your O'Level is strong and you want to save a year, JUPEB (200 Level via Direct Entry) is usually the better route.
  3. If your O'Level needs improvement or your UTME score was close, Pre-Degree (100 Level via UTME) may suit you better.
  4. Confirm your intended course accepts the route you are considering, and that the programme is open for your session.
  5. Check the current fees on the OOU CCED portal before paying, and apply through the CCED admission portal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do JUPEB and Pre-Degree at the same time?

No. They run in the same session and you can only be enrolled in one. Choose the route that matches your results.

Does Pre-Degree guarantee admission to OOU?

No. You must still write JAMB UTME, meet the cut-off, and pass the Pre-Degree exam. Pre-Degree only prepares you.

Can I use JUPEB results at universities other than OOU?

Yes. JUPEB is nationally recognized for Direct Entry into any Nigerian university.

What if I fail JUPEB?

You can re-sit the next year, or fall back to UTME. There is no carryover; it is a single-session exam.

Which is cheaper, JUPEB or Pre-Degree?

Fees change every session. Check the current amounts on the OOU CCED portal before deciding and before making any payment.
